Episode One

Juliet watched helplessly as her father shoved her mother against the wall and slapped her hard. The poor woman only cried. She was not strong like a man. She loved her husband and never wanted to fight back. All she could do was cry while her husband continued to beat her.

Juliet wanted to help, but she couldn’t. She had a health condition that made her unable to speak. She could hear and see everything, but no words would come out.

She was born without the ability to speak. There was no way for her to call for help or tell the neighbors what was happening.

At sixteen years old, Juliet was growing into a beautiful young woman.

When her father pushed her mother again, Juliet tried to step in, but he pushed her down too.

“Stay away from this fight!” her father shouted, pointing at her. “Your mother is stubborn, and I will deal with her my way. No one will stop me—not even the neighbors. Don’t bother trying to get help.”

Juliet moved back quickly, fear gripping her heart. She had never seen her father smile or be kind. Sometimes, she wondered if he was really her father. He was always cruel and scary.

Mr. Ken continued to beat her mother until he was satisfied and left her crying on the floor.

“Next time I tell you to cook rice, you better cook rice!” he shouted. “Don’t ever try to cook beans instead of rice. That beating is for going against me!”

“I’m sorry, my husband,” her mother said softly. “The money was low, so I decided to cook rice.”

“Nonsense!” Mr. Ken snapped. “You’re lucky I’m in a good mood. Otherwise, I would have ended you today, stupid woman!” With that, he stormed out.

As soon as he left, Juliet ran to her mother and held her close, tears streaming down her face. She wished she could speak to comfort her.

If only she could say something to make her mother feel better.

Miss Annabel had been married to Mr. Ken for over 17 years. Her only mistake was marrying the man she loved.

But her marriage was nothing like she expected. She was often mistreated, punished for small mistakes.

Her husband cared little for his family. He was only interested in his own pleasures—drinking, partying with other women, and then coming home to hurt his own family.

Miss Annabel became the breadwinner. She worked hard to provide for Juliet and herself. She sold brooms she made from her small farm at the market.

Many people told her to leave the marriage, but she hesitated. She still loved her husband and hoped she could make him happy.

That evening, Juliet boiled water to massage her mother’s bruises from the beating.

“If I could talk, I would tell my mother to leave,” Juliet thought to herself. “My father is a wicked man.”

Her mother looked at her and saw the sadness in her eyes.

“I know you don’t like how your father treats us,” Miss Annabel said gently. “But be strong. One day he will change. Nothing is too hard for God.”

The next day, Miss Annabel packed her things and prepared to go to the market.

“Make sure you don’t get into trouble,” she warned Juliet. “I’ve prepared food for you and your father.” Then she turned to leave.

Suddenly, her husband grabbed her roughly, scattering oranges from her bowl onto the floor.

“Where do you think you’re going?” he demanded.

“I’m going to sell my remaining oranges so I can buy food,” Miss Annabel said, bending down to pick them up.

“You’re going to the market, but you haven’t washed my clothes! Who will wash them?” Mr. Ken asked angrily.

“I’m sorry, my husband. I didn’t know your clothes were dirty. I’ll wash them after I sell the oranges.”

“After you sell the oranges?” he shouted.

He stepped closer and slapped her hard. She fell to the ground.

Juliet watched as her father beat her mother again. There was nothing she could do except cry.

She wished she could speak. Maybe she could tell her mother she married the wrong man.

She was scared her mother wouldn’t survive his abuse.

“Stupid woman!” Mr. Ken yelled. “Make sure those clothes are as clean as snow, or I’ll kill you myself!”

To be Continued.
