WHAT A W!CKED WORLD
Episode Three
“You’re a mad wife! What are you still trying to explain? That you went out to see another man and came back late?” Mr. Ken shouted furiously.
Miss Annabel stood with tears streaming down her face. How could her husband say such things after all the suffering she had faced at the market? She had come home tired, bruised in spirit, only to be met with more pain.
“My husband, please,” she pleaded softly. “Please don’t hurt me this time. Let me explain everything—why I came home late from the market.”
Juliet watched sadly from a distance. She hated seeing her father mistreat her mother but always stayed away because there was nothing she could do.
“There is nothing for you to explain!” Mr. Ken snapped. “You left the house early and didn’t come back until now. You kept me waiting and hungry all day. And you left your dumb daughter hungry too!”
Miss Annabel tried to explain, “I got to the market late. The buyers had left, so I had to sell the oranges one by one. After selling them all… I was…”
Before she could finish, her husband dragged her roughly to the wall and grabbed her by the neck, squeezing so tightly it was hard for her to breathe.
“I’ve told you before—stop making silly mistakes! One day, I will end you with my own hands, and no one will stop me!” he hissed, then released her and walked away.
Miss Annabel collapsed into tears again, knowing her husband would never believe her story. The weight of despair settled heavily on her heart.
Juliet approached and wrapped her arms gently around her mother. She knew her mother would never be late unless something was terribly wrong.
Later, Miss Annabel quietly told Juliet everything—how she was robbed on her way home by some boys who took all her money.
Juliet believed her mother. She knew her mother was telling the truth. But Juliet’s heart ached because she could not speak. She could hear everything but could not say a word.
Instead, Juliet held her mother tightly, silently showing her support and love.

The next morning, very early, there was a knock at the door. Miss Annabel opened it to find Mama Jennifer standing there, looking angry.
“Mama Juliet, I’m tired of your promises and delays. You keep promising to pay me, but you keep failing. Where is my 50,000 naira?” she demanded.
“Please calm down,” Miss Annabel begged. “I will pay you soon. Things are so hard right now. You won’t believe—I was robbed last night after selling all my oranges.”
Mama Jennifer’s face twisted with anger. “I don’t care about your troubles. I want my money now!” she shouted.
Annabel tried to calm her. “There’s no need to shout. The walls have ears, and people will laugh at me. I promise to pay you before the weekend.”
Mama Jennifer left, warning she would return soon to collect her money.
No sooner had she gone than Mr. Ken walked out of the house without a word to his wife.
He never loved Annabel. He married her because he knew she would do anything to provide for their family.
Mr. Ken headed to his usual spot, a local bar where he drank palm wine and ate meat using the money he took from his wife.
“I told you, you are the woman I love,” he told a lady sitting nearby. “I don’t love my wife. Just give me a chance.”
The woman laughed. “Wahala no dey finish. So you mean you’re married, but you like me and not your wife?”
“Exactly,” he said, grinning. “Just be my secret lover. I will take care of you.”
He slid some money across the table, making the woman smile.
“Where do you want to go?” she whispered.
“My house,” Mr. Ken replied. “Let’s go and enjoy.”
“What? Your house? I don’t want trouble with your wife,” she said nervously.
Mr. Ken laughed. “My wife is like my slave. She does as I say. I’m sure she’s at the market now, so no worries. Let’s go.”
When Mr. Ken arrived home with the woman, Juliet was sitting alone watching television. She saw her father walk in with another woman and felt a deep sadness.
At that moment, Juliet realized her mother had married the worst man alive—a man who cheated on her and brought other women into their home.
“Are you sure it’s safe doing this here? Your daughter is watching,” the woman whispered to Mr. Ken.
“Exactly. She’s watching, and she’ll keep watching—because she can’t speak. She won’t be able to tell anyone what she saw,” Mr. Ken said with a cruel smile as he took the woman inside his bedroom.
That evening, when Miss Annabel returned home from the market, Juliet tried desperately to tell her what she had seen. But without the ability to speak, she was trapped inside her silence.
I saw my father bring another woman into our home, she thought sadly. How can I tell my mother about the beast she married?
